The Friends of the Lakewood Libraries, (FOLL), is pleased to announce award of scholarships to four students of high caliber, both in character and academics. They all have strong desires to further their education and have volunteered to help Angelo Iacaboni and/or George Nye, Jr. Libraries. In alphabetical order, they are:
Kade Castleberry, soon to graduate from Valley Christian High School, is a leader, mentor, coach and very active participant in campus organizations. Kade is a member of the Honor Roll and the National Honor Society. He earned the titles of 2014 Chosen Senior Graduation Usher and Most Inspiration Volleyball Player. Kade volunteered in the Athletics and Drama Departments at Valley Christian.
Kade is a strong positive influence on those around him, as a leader and a coach in volleyball, a mentor to drama students and a diligent and responsible volunteer with the Long Beach Shakespeare Company. Kade is very involved in community based organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, The Compton Initiative, City of Lakewood Housing Renovation and City of Seal Beach Clean-up. His exemplary work ethic has earned Kade the respect and admiration of everyone around him.
Sarah Fett, while attending Lakewood High School, has completed 9 months (152 hours) Red Shirt Internship at St. Mary's Medical Center, where she worked with medical staff to learn all about the works that go on in a hospital. Sarah is an active, hard working and conscientious student. A four year member of the Lakewood High School Music program, she is a focused and an enthusiastic participant in many school and community performances.
In her fourth year as a Lancerette, Sarah exemplifies the ideal for new members. She is a member of the Madrigal Choir, Student Honor and Recognition Program, National Honors Society and has participated in the Female Leadership Academy. While attending Advance Placement classes in English Literature and Composition, Macroeconomics and Biology and Pre-Calculus Honors, Sarah still found time to participate in numerous community activities such as Quilts for Valor, St. Luke's "Day of the Preschool", Sheriff Station Drive By for Cancer, Veteran's Hospital Memorial Day Ceremony, "Red High Heels Walk" for Heart Health, Cards for Veterans, Taste of Lakewood and Friend of the Lakewood Libraries book sales.
Katy Gilliam is completing her studies at Petra Christian Academy. She is an outstanding student. Katy is also graduating from Coastline Community College with a triple major AA in Arts and Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences and American studies.
In the last four years, Katy has volunteered at the Operation Christmas Child Processing Center. She organized and coordinated outreach to Colette Children's Home and participated in the Orange County Food Bank. Katy has completed fifty hours of volunteer time, in five years, with the CHEA of California Used Curriculum Exchange. She has given her time to Lakewood Project shepherd, Friends of the Lakewood Libraries book sales and Bridges Church Sunday School. Katy volunteered with the Lakewood Pan American Association and for two years she chaired the Pan Am Poetry & Poster Contest. Katy is focused and determined, diligent and hard working as evidenced by her triple major. She is energetic with a great attitude and a positive influence on all those around her.
Alexys Quiroz, soon to graduate from Lakewood High School, is a leader, mentor and a supremely active participant in many school organizations and in the community while maintaining an outstanding academic record. An active cadet in the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp since 9th Grade, Alexys served as Education Officer, Operations Officer, Academic Team Commander and is currently the Commanding Officer. She was part of the FRA Postal Exam Team and won first place at Nationals in 2014. Alexys has Advance Placement classes in World History, U.S. History, English Language, Chemistry, English Literature, Macroeconomics, Government, Physics 1 and Calculus AB; Honors classes in Chemistry 1-2 and Pre-Calculus and Accelerated classes in English 1-2 and English 3-4. She is Secretary for Female Leadership Academy in 2014 and 2015, a member of the Swim Team, the Founder and President of Make a Change Club, organizing service projects in the community. A member of the Student Honor and Recognition Program in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, National Honor Society in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, Basketball Team 2012. She is Student Representative for the Friends of the Lakewood Libraries in 2013, 2014 and 2015, recruiting, organizing and supervising volunteers for book sales and Taste of Lakewood. Alexys has volunteered for the Pan American Association in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. She has served on the Committee to Bring the Vietnam Wall to Lakewood in 2014 and 2015.
Alexys also participated in the Student Poll Worker Program - Statewide Direct Primary Elections June 2014 and attended Congresswoman Sanchez's Training for Tomorrow Congressional Internship Program from June to August 2014, for 12 hours a week. She possess a strong work ethic and exceptional leadership qualities. She is mature, enthusiastic, respectful, a very dedicated student, and an outstanding individual!
